Chapter Twelve

~ Royal Rage ~

Filled with anxiety, Coraline waited for Agar’s return. She hoped for the best, but feared the worst. Whether he could separate his predictable need for revenge against Aron, Tasha, and the others by taking it out on her remained to be seen. In her mind, being his wife would seem to be a deterrent to his retribution, but she couldn’t be sure of that with his explosive personality. The fact she’d chosen to stay behind was where she was pinning her hopes to survive the incident. After all, she lived in a male dominant society where the men could do basically whatever they wanted. Women were seen as lesser beings and subject to the control and the whims of men. Living with his excesses and unacceptable behaviors was challenge enough, but now she potentially faced consequences for events out of her control. It was unfair, but wouldn’t matter to him. She already knew that. It was too late to reconsider her decision. A part of her longed to be on the road with Aron, free of the menace her husband represented.

She had no trouble knowing when he arrived. She could hear his shouts and the corresponding commotion as he stomped toward the royal suites.

He burst in the still damaged door, ready to kill. The sight of her stopped him in his tracks, like he couldn’t conceive of the idea she would choose to stay.

“What are you doing here?” he asked stupidly.

“I live here. I’m your wife, remember?”

“You didn’t flee with the others?”

“Obviously, I’m standing right in front of you, Agar.”

“I, eh, I must think about what’s transpired. An arm of the royal military has mutinied against the crown. This is unacceptable and it’s a capital offense punishable by death. I shouldn’t have allowed Aron to live after his prior transgressions. I thought to compromise his punishment for your sake, my darling. I’ve come to regret that gesture. They’ve interpreted it as weakness. I’ll make no further gestures for them. Now they’ll know the wrath of the imperial state. I’ll never let them escape. What was stolen from me will be returned. I swear on my life.”

Coraline said nothing. She merely watched him. After a moment, he looked at her.

“I must tell you, wife. I misjudged you. I thought you shallow like so many in the palace, scheming against me to work some mischief for their advantage. I thought you married me merely to gain royal status. You’ve shown me an aspect of you I never anticipated. It’s possible you truly have feelings for me, or perhaps you’re the supreme manipulator. We shall discover that soon enough. If you pledge to me your loyalty, it means your village friends are now your enemies. You can give them no aid, comfort, or any other means of assistance. If they contact you, it’s required you immediately advise me. I’d even go beyond that to say if I require your help in setting a trap to lure them in, you must cooperate fully.
